Accused dog killer has new puppy at home, despite judge's ruling
EAGLE CREEK, Ore. -- A man who admitted to police that he killed his dogs because he couldn’t afford to take care of them now has a puppy at home – despite a judge’s order against it.
Japheth (J.P.) Daniel Stalcup, 25, is awaiting trial on aggravated animal abuse charges in connection to the November alleged killings of his two dogs. As part of his conditions to be free from jail is the order of “no possession or living with any animals.”
Acting on a tip from a viewer that Stalcup had a puppy, KATU visited his home in Eagle Creek, Ore., on Monday. We talked to Stalcup’s wife, Rose Stalcup. She admitted they had the puppy, but said it was OK. She also said the couple had the puppy before the judge's ruling.
“It’s legal. We’ve already looked into it,” she said, then ordering KATU to leave the property.
Reached by telephone, J.P. Stalcup also said his lawyer cleared it with a judge to have pets at home. However, prosecutors said the defendant is not allowed to be in a home with animals.
Attempts to reach Stalcup’s attorney on Monday were not successful.
It is standard for defendants awaiting trial on animal abuse charges to not have contact with animals.
The investigation of Stalcup, 25, began when he initially told police his dogs had gone missing and that he later found Buddy and Duke dead about 100 yards from the house. Both dogs had been killed with an axe.
Stalcup gave an interview to KATU in November, decrying the disturbing nature of the dog slayings.
“What happens if, you know, they do that a couple more times and all of the sudden they’re not happy with – it’s not giving them as much jollies as it was the first couple times – so what are they gonna do next?,” Stalcup said in November.
As the police investigation progressed, he eventually admitted to killing the dogs with an axe because he couldn’t think of an alternative to caring for them.
He is due in court on March 25.
There are many things wrong with this. I hope the story prompts the judge to send the man to jail to await his trial.
this pissssssssssss me off
KATU -- Please keep us updated on this story. Has the dog been removed from this man? Has the state ever checked to see if his CHILDREN are safe?
I already have several pets, but I do live on a small acreage and would be willing to take this poor dog if no other home is available for him.
Also, I really want to thank the neighbor and KATU for reporting this. Thank you!
Dog should be taken away, he should never have another animal.
he shouldn't have any animals
I will take that dog. Australian Kelpie to be a friend to my Kelpie.
so as I understand it he killed his dogs cause he couldn't afford them, but a pup, he can. Well, how about the kids in his house? they could get expensive then what? when his woman was interviewed there was at least one child in the background. the man is a seriously dangerous person who will kill again when it gets to be too expensive, inconvenient, or who knows what, but it will happen again.
It's really easy to do an address search on Stalcup in Eagle Creek.... very tempting to go put up a "Dog Killer" sign in front of their house so the neighbors know who they're dealing with.
@eap Neighbors probly already know
Nancy has it right.
Wow! That is truly disturbing on so many different levels it's hard to begin on this one. First off he should be barred from owning any kind of animal and/or owning a business that deals with direct animal care. This guy isn't going to stop there. I bet if he can't out that "manly" aggresion out on his pets he'll take it out on somebody else. Might even be his wife.
dumbass should be killed with an axe, and if that cant be done... May the devil take him ASAP and hope he rots there and is in pain for thousands of years to come. Or hey, a good idea, tie him up two semi's and have them tear him apart. No excuse for a man like this. HIs girlfriend is a pathetic whitetrash thing who should be gone from this life as well.Â
I knew when I first read the original story that something was amiss with Stalcup's story. Pretty frightening that he embellished his lie with ''what ifs''. So, what if judge? I agree with the defendant. What's going to happen when he becomes bored with killing dogs? When he stops getting his jollies? He's giving a pretty loud heads up, here. He needs to go to the mental ward. That's what his sentence should have been.
Its a dog..Do people really think they need the same rights as humans?
Take the dog away from him, put him in jail. Give the dog a decent chance at a good home.
Throw this guy in jail...and his wife too.Â
stalcup is one sick puppy !
@sargerator Funny -- when this story broke the first time after he'd "found" his dogs killed with an axe, a whole bunch of his fellow church members and some neighbors came to his defense saying what a wonderful, god-fearing man he was and how someone sneaked in and let the dogs loose.  I guess some people will believe anything though.  Not us cynics!!
He needs to go to jail is what I meant
Albert Jensen no way, you are as crazy as this man. He needs to go to mail and the dog needs to be removed from the home NOW
Psychopathic AND narcissistic - quite a combination. I hope both he and his wife see the inside of a jail -- soon!
I could be sympathetic if he had put his dogs down because they were sick and suffering. I know a lot of people who believe they should take care of their own vs taking to the vet to be put down. They do so as quickly as possible and are often crying when it happens. They give their dogs a proper burial and mourn them. To me when this is the case there should be no ramifications.
This sicko killed them because they were inconvenient. That is so wrong. And to do it with an axe? Who does that? I sure hope he doesn't have any children, when they become inconvenient he may chop them up. I hope they take him in for violation of his release terms and put him in jail.Â
Sicko--off to jail for you!
Good thing his kids are away in boarding school, Lizzie Borden school
Such an open and shut case - why isn't PPD there to take him away, and if he resists, show him the ax?
@Benjamin Schniffle PPD has no jurisdiction in Eagle Creek, OR
So besides being a cruel evil bastard he is a liar too? Â Ok maybe I "shouldnt judge". Â Thanks neighbor. Â I Â hope he goes to jail.
That's terrible! They should not have that dog! PLUS the dog was running around w/o their supervision!
"It's not giving him as much jollies as the first couple of times, so...what are they going to do next?" said  Stalcup.
Is that REALLY the quote you said before you were arrested for hacking your dogs to death? And now you have this one in your home?Â
You have riled up this group on this forum. You, sir, do not deserve to have any animals under your care. And your family should be watchful as well.Â
What is Stalcups major malfunction?
@Fed up You would have to live out there to actually visit with the in-bred's and the mindset of so many. I spent years  as a sheriff out there and you have no idea what those folks think when it comes to crimes against animals, their own kids and you do not need to know the rest...
Axe killing is the work of a psychopath.....no matter how you look at it. Then he called 911 to bring it to light....and lied....then media.... Then admitted it. Lets see what the next few years bring....SCARY
He now can afford this one???
that makes me sick and the wife is all no it's k to have the og y so ur husband can kill the puppy next that's sad
Omg the guys is out of his gourd get the dog away from him !
The way he killed the other dogs, not typical.
I think KATU should plaster Mr stalcups face all over this article.
People change! Leave the guy alone until you stop euthanizing 5 million pets every year!
He could have asked for help instead of killing his dogs. :(
All we have to do now is train that dog to shoot a gun and claim self defense.
Rules were made for all but him??? He needs to pay the consequences. And really...this is NOT a puppy...wrong photo maybe?
Someone needs to go get that dog!
WTF
no comment!
We really need stronger penalties for animal abuse. This is outrageous.
If he in fact is breaking the law, LE needs to show up with the right paperwork, and arrest him. They perhaps also need to "rescue" the puppy from him. He killed two other dogs just for the heck of it, now he needs to follow the law. If he is going against the judges order, then he needs to be held responsible for his actions. Perhaps some jail time would wake him up? He and his wife need to wake up.
It is sad that those neat dogs had to die due to stupidity or whatever on the part of this individual.
I wonder how "dog napping" would work in that area...or dog rescue.
Seriously? Can someone explain to me how this can happen?!
the pup has a gun doesent it?...I hope
What? Jeez louise, he kills his two dog so he can get a puppy?
If he couldn't afford the first 2, how can he afford this new puppy? Someone needs to take this puppy away from them before it ends up dead, too.
@Jamie Baylous Caya Agreed, plus I think it had nothing to do with *afford them*; it had to do with he was no doubt tired of their adult, untrained, un-neutered behavior ( all his fault btw)so he killed them out of anger.
@whirledworld  You are so right. People get puppies and excuse the bad behavior to their being a puppy. Then the animals grow up, and guess what? are still untrained and unruly. Why do people even get dogs if they are not willing to spend the time to properly socialize and train them. It's really not a tough thing to do. From what I've seen lately, most dogs would be easier to train, and are much smarter than the average person.
