PORTLAND, Ore. – A man and woman were arrested Friday morning in connection with the death of a baby girl in April, Portland police said.

Sarah Mangus, 29, and Jamie Mangus, 34, were indicted earlier this month in the death of Krystal Mangus. They were charged with murder by abuse and first-degree manslaughter.

On April12, police were called to assist paramedics who were treating Krystal, who wasn’t breathing when they arrived.

Homicide detectives determined she had been born in a North Portland apartment and hadn’t received medical attention.

Bill McGuire said he was at the house on North Newman Avenue when the couple brought the baby over.

"They come walking down the street with the baby and brought it inside," McGuire said. "One of my friends said it looked purple. So she took the baby and started doing CPR on it and got the baby revived - just for a short while and then the paramedics got here, and the baby had died again."

He said the couple didn't seem too alarmed about what was happening.

"They were out like they were taking a baby for a walk. ... even though the baby was purple," he said."

The couple was married in 2009 but Jamie filed for divorce in October 2013 while Sarah was pregnant, according to the divorce filing. She was expected to give birth in March, that document said.

Police told KATU that the couple was the parents of the baby, but Jamie claimed in his divorce filing that he was not the father of the child.

A look into the couple's background revealed that Jamie Mangus was convicted of criminal mischief.

In an unrelated case, court documents stated that a woman filed a restraining order against him. In that case, it was alleged that he threatened to break her legs. The restraining order was filed the same month the baby died.

KATU called the medical examiner to find out the baby's cause of death, but the person working on that case was out of the office Friday.
