Words of a Killer: Christian Longo writes about his dead family
»Play Video
PORTLAND, Ore. – Christian Longo is on death row for one of the most notorious crimes in Oregon history, killing his wife and three children along the coast then fleeing to Mexico.
KATU News has exclusively obtained revelations from the mind of this murderer written in his own words.
Longo always wanted to be writer. When he was arrested in 2002 at a beach resort in Mexico, the tourists he'd befriended thought he was a journalist for the New York Times. That's what he'd told them.
It is, perhaps, a reflection of the life he wishes he would have had. The man he might have been instead of the man he became – a husband with a wife, three children, and diminishing resources to provide for them.
It was not quite Christmas that year, 2001, when he strangled his wife, Mary Jane, and their 2-year-old daughter, Madison, then stuffed them into a suitcase and tossed it off the docks in Newport. He drowned Zachary and Sadie, dropping them off a bridge into Alsea Bay with rocks tied around their ankles.
Ten years later he's now writing about his dead family. In a letter obtained by KATU News, Christian Longo tells a woman he says he loves, how he's come to terms with his crimes.
He talks about the trial: "I got up on the stand and essentially blamed my wife for everything. I was still stuck in a phase where I couldn't fathom the thought of me being capable of doing what I was convicted of."
He writes that he eventually began "studying what a psychologist said I was and came to terms with it, almost totally agreeing that he was right ... his conclusion was the narcissistic personality disorder which he called 'compensatory' -- basically self-centeredness related to a damaged core sense of self."
Longo has told KATU News from prison how it was a woman outside the confines of his cell – a close friend – who inspired him to take up the cause of organ donation. He thought, why not make these life-saving organs available from inmates? Especially those like him, who are condemned to die.
He writes about the idea extensively and passionately in the letter, and about how the Will Smith movie “Seven Pounds” inspired him to want to donate to specific people based on the productivity of their lives, as Smith's character did in the film.
He admits that sounds "kind of like a God complex – but to me it seemed like an extreme version of Ty Pennington saying, ‘move that bus,’” a reference to the host of ABC’s Extreme Makeover series.
Longo says his organ donation campaign is also a way for him to stay sane. He writes: "When I let myself think about what I did I can barely operate. I've gone through chunks of time where it took every ounce of motivation I had to get to the toilet 3 feet away. I had to force myself to eat and brush my teeth. And I don't think that it was out of a depression so much as shock. …
"Of course I wish I could go back to the moments before, to be honest, and express my failing or pick up the phone to ask for help … or be a man. But I can't. So I'm doing what I do instead and trying to avoid thinking too much about it. Because the thoughts are horrible.
"I dream a few times a week about my daughters. They're usually happy and playing and it's pleasant. But my mind, even in the dream, knows the reality. And it always switches to an image of my son that haunts me for the rest of that dream state. Sometimes, I get back to sleep, a lot of times I don't. And unless I get distracted pretty quickly, the image sticks and I'm haunted throughout the day until it fades. I rarely dream of my wife and I don't know what that means. I think it's from a detachment from her long before the end -- which I know sounds callous, but I'm being honest."
The end of Christian Longo's story still waits to be written. Whether it will have an epilogue about the lives his organ donation program saved remains a mystery. It’s a life stranger than fiction and a death, even now, he's desperate to control.
The Oregon Department of Corrections has so far rejected Longo's proposal to set up an organ transplant program involving death row inmates. He authored a book about his idea earlier this year which is for sale online.
He is pure evil. It would be a travesty to try to lengthen anyone's life with his waste of space organs. IF what he writes is the truth and he really has many physical and psychological problems because of dreams, etc...then I say let him rot in there. Then when he finally dies he can go straight to hell.
Can anyone not see the baby killer's hidden plan is not to donate organs at all, but simply to put off the injections which will make the organs useless? Offer him this deal: we will hang you by the neck until dead tomorrow and be able to use all your organs - except perhaps the short sections of arteries damaged by the rope. Sign here, please.
Â
I would pay to see you finally go down. What goes around, comes around, people. Given time on the loose, you'd have killed your own parents too.
This guy should not be able to be heard by the public who cares what he says, who wants his organs there tarnished and not suitable for anyone to use, this sucks he gets these interviews with media! Where's the justice for this family WTF state of Oregon simple injection to this baby killer we know for a fact he deserves what your suppose give him!
I know in China they would load up all that are condemned to die take them to a stadium and at the stadium there would be teams of doctors with Ambulances and as each one is shot they rush to them and place them on life support machines and take their organs out and donate them.I do not know if this is still being done but it was about 8years ago and people were tring to make them stop this practice. However I think it is a good thing to do if the person agrees and it is not forced because some people believe you have to die with all your body parts.I know they used to give the Eunichs their male body parts back to them that were removed so they could be buried with the parts or burnt withem or whatever they do at the time of death back then. They had to have them all at the time of their body disposal. To me this sounds good to take the parts from the condemned.I also see how this practice could be misused by some of us humns eventually too.
I don't see Oregon executing anyone, ever. In fact, I expect that within the next few years, probably within ten years, they will abolish the death penalty. This case has always bothered me immensely because I never understood what was going on in Mary Jane's mind, allowing him to drag the family all over the country so that he, Longo, wouldn't have to face the consequences of his crimes. And if he really had had enough of the husband/family deal he could easily have walked away from them. I think he killed them all because in his mind that they were to blame for his failures. He is a narcissist of the first order, and as far as I know there is no cure for being one. I wish they would send him and others like him to a supermax prison so that there would be zero chance he will ever escape. I don't believe in the death penalty but when comes to Longo, it becomes really hard to not want to see him dead for what he did to his children.
exterminate that sub human asap
why can't they put this stupid animal to death.
This guy is one of the most evil, self-centered individuals ever. He never wanted to get on with his execution. He is too much in love with himself. For the longest time, he insisted the deaths of his family were his wife's fault. Remember, that big story about how when he arrived from work, she had already killed two of the kids and had started on the youngest. He said he was so angry that he killed her and had to finish off Madison in order to "put her out of her misery." Not only does he murder his beautiful family, but he tries to ruin the memory of Mary Jane. Scientists say that the organs would be of no value anyway because of the chemicals that are used for the execution process. Longo's answer is to change the method of execution. Hey, there's a thought! Maybe instead of utilizing the most humane method possible, we can get "creative." This is just a lame attempt by Longo to be in the spotlight, once again. He is a monster. A friend of Mary Jane's family said it best when she said they should remove his organs before death, without the use of anesthesia.
This piece of crap still radiates the narcissistic tendencies that he has been diagnosed with, by bringing attention to himself with grandiose aspirations of redeeming his character in the slick pretense of "feeling" towards his fellow man with the organ donation deal. Â He has no feeling, but for himself. Â This show really hit me hard. Â Most crime shows just make me feel helpless and in complete awe that some human person could kill some other person (usually a "loved one") just for insurance money or child custody or to gain another relationship without the loss of money, or finances. Â I cannot fathom this madness, so it intrigues me to no end. Â But after watchig this story, i had to give crime shows a break for a few weeks. i was haunted by this madman's murders. oh yeah he's mad, crazy mad, insanely messed up mad, but not the kind of crazy that defies law - he knew right from wrong and tried to cover it up and evade authorities. PLEASE, OREGON, EXECUTE Â HIM PROMPTLY AND BURN HIS ORGANS.
Â
Organ donation is one thing, but I wish he would spend more of his time left on earth helping us to understand the mind of a malignant narcissist. Â They are some of the most manipulative, sneaky, hard to read people in society and it would benefit everyone to hear from his side what we need to do to either help or avoid them. Â I don't doubt that he has accepted who/what he is. Â Anything is possible and who are we to judge.. it's not like just because he's accepted it, he's going to suddenly become someone else. Â He'll always be a narcissist, but let's try to learn what we can.
@emari You cannot trust anything that comes out of his mouth. If I spoke to him right now and he told me that today is Monday November 5, 2012, I would go and check the calender myself because whatever he says is completely suspect. These people are strangers to the truth so trying to study him would be, IMO, an exercise in futility.
Yet, you all continue to read the story and take the time to comment. Anna Canzano is an amazing reporter, and is just doing her job. The more comments you people make, the more the station(s) see that this type of story is what the public wants to read.
Are we so perverted that we need to allow such filth to be propagated only to have some one else possibly get and idea and do a "Copy Cat"? We have issues. Society is giving birth to some ugly scenarios .
He should be haunted all day and all night by visions of his son, girls and wife, for ever and ever, amen. He is such a POS. He is still playing his game. Nacissistic human failure. Hope Carma bites him bad.
Â
It sucks he is getting the attention he wants, but at the same time we all want to hear and see more of it.
@Troy Fawcett ......no " we all" don't !
.pull the story! Â this is just messed up.
Â
Why is anyone giving this miscreant air time? Leave him to rot in his jail cell ... alone .... with no attention ... PERIOD!
@I812 they, need to pull the story don't they. I agree with you.
@who? Unfortunately the media prefers sensationalism over journalism and is always seeking the "exclusive" no matter how arcane or inappropriate. This is a prime example of the media attempting to play to perverted interests at the expense of appropriateness and journalistic ethics. Anna Canzano is one of the worst and apparently there are no true journalists at KATU who have editorial responsibility. Sad,
@I812 Are you serious? One missed word, and a small one at that, coupled with a missing letter and you think that gives you the latitude to attack them for pointing out what you're doing? Come on, be smarter than that.
Â
@on shing dao is absolutely right in that when you spend the time and energy on a story like this, you're giving the news outlet what they want. Secondarily, there are people who want to know more about this story, and this man, because we are interested in the human condition. Just because *you* think this is pandering to him doesn't mean that it really is, and attacking a journalist (who is doing a lot more to educate us than you are, as an armchair critic) for writing a story that you happen to have read in its entirety yet don't think should exist just points out how you're a part of the circle. If you don't understand that, then the problem resides not in the writer, or another commenter, but within yourself.

@on shing dao Your inability to construct a sentence or properly spell a word you are attempting to use simply validates your ignorance.
@I812 you giving it attention by commenting and viewing the article. You're playing right into it. You naivety is getting the best of you.Â
Anna at it again. Giving aid and comfort to the enemy, a monster like this. Next she will be bashing law enforcement agin. She is on the wrong side again by giving this creep a voice and attention. He needs to be put down. He needs to be silenced. All pleasure and anything that brings him joy or comfort needs to be taken from him. She needs to stop catering to the side of evil that victimize the innocent. Maybe once she could do a story supporting the side of good.
@MMRoach But what is "good" really?Â
Organ donation is rather a moot point here, as the chemicals used to execute Longo - as they course through his body would contaminate the organs most commonly donated - rendering them useless for that purpose. Â And, I doubt Oregon would execute him by less intrusive means - such as hanging. Â I suggest the State donate his corpse to a body farm, where medical examiners and detectives can use Longo to study the stages of human decomposition - to assist in determining time of death. Â An observational skill which was no doubt utilized when determining the approximate time of death of the family he murdered.
This is one of the many reasons I hate KATU, and Anna Song, in particular. No other media outlet in Oregon gives serial killers a voice. These ugly, criminal losers love the attention, and KATU gives them what they want. She/KATU did the same thing with Ward Weaver. You SUCK, Anna Song and KATU.
@QuandoQuandoQuando Hmmm.. Serial killers a voice. Yeah I have to agree to a point, but then not, only because this helps others understand and maybe watch out for someone like this to come along in their life. Or certain warning signs. People snap for no reason, it is so weird. I find this very interesting reading. With all the murder/suicides going on throughout the world (at a record number I might add) , it mystifies my curiosity as to how someone with normal lives suddenly feel the need to act crazy and commit such crimes. Every day is a new day, but some like this guy do not seem to see the same optimism that occurs in "normal thinking" individuals. It is quite intriguing to me... I personally cannot fathom killing anyone,  let alone my whole family, so I and others want to know why, what, and how this happens. Now that we are giving attention to these criminals we are able to gather more information to help solve future murders. It helps really.Â
I didn't read the article, BTW, I could care less what he has to say.
Why is he allowed to make a dime off of this book? He is still self-centered please a core sense of self! This is all about self and who is he to decide who would get an organ and who would not. Still trying to manipulate are we Mr. Longo! You are a sad person may God forgive you.
@2little2late I'm sure he doesn't get any money from the book, if it sold at all. I'm sure Mary Jane's family has seen to that. Most states have a law that prevents inmates from profiting from their crimes. I don't know about Oregon so that's why the family would need to sue and make sure he doesn't have any money in his prison account to buy things that would make him more comfortable.
So What, You want to give this piece of you-know-what a medal? Â Why even give him the satisfaction of knowing this BS he wrote is even slightly significant? Two words. . . Â DEATH PENALTY !!
@Justmark .......not with the law avoider Kitzhaber in office.
Guess I'd be the only one interested but I missed my calling as an abnormal behavior psychologist.
Â
Some people like shark week, I like serial killer week...
I couldn't care less what this animal has to write.
@Rob C Animals don't deserve to have their good name besmirched like in your reference. Animals DON'T do things like that - only humans. Maybe we could call him a monster....
this was all a hoax.
@on shing dao ........how long have you been part of the lunatic fringe?
@Rob C when you know, you know.
He should have to spend part of everyday in a room looking at pictures of his victims.
@Cherylanne you should spend everyday looking at your face.
@on shing dao So mature! Idiot!
@on shing dao @Cherylanne  Really? Are you 12 years old or just that petty?
hang him!!
No news here, folks... like other sociopaths, Longo's ramblings are all about "me-me-me", "what I want / feel/ like / don't like", and so on...  not even a HINT of remorse for cold-bloodedly snuffing out the lives of 4 innocent people, 3 of whom were little kids... Â
Â
Which leads me to a question (a little bit off-topic, but related)... "When he (Longo) was arrested in 2002 at a beach resort in Mexico,..."... How is it that we (the US, that is) were able to arrest Longo at a beach resort in Mexico, but we CAN'T get that guy that shot the deputy (the one that DDA Don Abar said "the US-Mexico extradition treaties don't apply to this case")..???   Longo is on death row, which makes it a capital crime... so how did we get him oout of Mexico, but we can't get the other guy back here???  Â
@margay1 Just guessing but Longo was a US citizen, the other guy was an illegal from Mexico.
That makes sense... I forgot the other guy was an illegal... thanks, CRB..!
@margay1 No problem, I certainly wish we COULD bring him back here to face what he did to that officer. I watched his dad on tv the other night talking about getting the call on Father's Day. Just sad and horrible.
He wants to donate organs based on the productivity of people's lives?  He obviously does not realize how narcissistic that sounds, especially so coming from him. Who the heck is anyway he to judge the "productivity" of anyone's life? He really should have kept that thought to himself.
