10-year-old 911 caller: 'I just wanted to stay safe and calm'

CAMAS, Wash. – A 10-year-old girl who called 9-1-1 when she heard burglars break into her home met the 9-1-1 operator who guided her through the dramatic ordeal.
Paityn Mock and her mother Jenn met operator Rich Foster on Tuesday to thank him for calmly staying on the phone with Paityn for 14 minutes.
“You did an excellent job,” Foster told Paityn.
“Thank you for helping me through it,” Paityn said.
A week ago, the two had a much more terrifying conversation.
Paityn said she didn't answer the door because she saw there was a stranger outside. Instead, she hid in the pantry and watched as the burglars broke in through a downstairs window. She called 9-1-1.
Foster worked to keep Paityn safe and calm while three burglars ransacked her home.
“I’m in my pantry, they’re upstairs,” Paityn told Foster.
“Can you get out of your house safely?” Foster asked.
“They’re teenagers that are in my house,” she said.
Foster then helped guide her out of the house.
“I’m going to keep you on the phone until and officer gets there. Are you still in the backyard?”
“Yes, I’m by the tree but if they drive up they can clearly see me, but I’m trying to hide.”
“OK, just keep trying to hide, you’re doing good, OK?”
Paityn’s mom, Jenn, was at the grocery store. Paityn said she watched her mom arrive and rush into their home, not knowing if the burglars were gone.
“I was scared because I didn’t know if they were still in there and if they had any weapons on them,” said Paityn.
Deputies were already on the scene. They said they arrested one of the suspects and are looking for two others.
Jenn Mock said it will be a while before she leaves her daughter home alone again, but she was very impressed by Paityn’s poise under pressure when she listened to the 9-1-1 call.
“It sent me into tears the first time I heard it, but she got somebody that was understanding and knew he could keep her calm,” said Mock. “I can’t be more thankful. Because you never know how this could have ended if she interrupted something.
“I can’t be prouder of her.”
Paityn said she was very grateful for Foster’s help, but she doesn’t want to listen to the call again. Going through it once was enough for her.
“I was freaking out inside,” Paityn said. “But I wasn’t screaming or anything like that outside.
"I just wanted to stay safe and calm."

Great job Paityn!

Now, mom...get your daughter to a gun class and teach her to safely handle a gun and shoot. That way, next time you can call 911 and have them come haul away the trash! ;-)
Whatta cute kid!
Wow! I thought 911 was for reporting that someone served you cold chicken nuggets.

 @Icarus LOL!!! Awesome....people often entertain.
Give credit to this young girl she did something uncommon for 911 callers, she followed instructions.
Â
Sounds minor, but that's getting rarer these days. People panic, their heart races, they are in an unfamiliar situation, all of that contributes to them not doing the one thing they should do and that is listen to the dispatchers.
Â
Good for her. She is fine, her mom is fine and they likely will catch all of the people who broke into her home.
Â
And that's what the inside of CRESA dispatch looks like huh? Have not been in there before.

Â
Yay Paityn!  What a brave young lady.
Â
Great story!Â
I couldn't be prouder of her if she were my own daughter.Â
Â
Well done, Paityn!!
What a brilliant young girl. She and her mom should be very proud!
I think she knew her address sje was just scared,  proud of her.
What a brave girl. My 5 year old grand daughter knows her address, I'm surprised the 10 year old couldn't tell the 911 operator where she was.
@theVon  ~  Even mature adults can "freeze" under extreme stress like that... they can forget their own name, where they are...things that normally they recite without even thinking about it... Â
Â
This young lady did an outstanding job, as did the dispatcher who helped her stay calm and guided her outside, helping her stay safe until the police arrived. Â Â
Â
Paityn's mom is to be commended for raising her daughter with common sense, eg: not answering the door when a stranger was outside, then calling 9-1-1, staying on the phone with the dispatcher, and following his instructions. Â There are plenty of adults out there who would not have done as well.
@theVon Not sure what you mean here. I see no where in the article that she could not give him her address.
@lizz Listen to the audio clip, and you will hear the girl's terrifying words as she talks to the 911 operator. At first she didn't know her address, as she is in tears. She finds a letter, and then tells the operator.
Â
Sometimes words are not told in the article. One has to scope out the entire article to discern such info.
 @lizz You're welcome.  =)
Thank you.
Just when I decide that there is no hope for people, here comes a little girl to show me not everyone is a loser. Good job, Paityn, I am sure your mom is exceedingly proud of you (I know I am)! Not panicking is the best thing in the world. You showed more than your share of guts under pressure!
