Driver in I-84 rollover crash airlifted out
TROUTDALE, Ore. – Oregon State Police say that a traffic accident on Interstate 84 westbound, about one mile east of Troutdale, has led to a confirmed fatality.
A single vehicle reportedly rolled over on the freeway Wednesday afternoon. Traffic is limited to one lane of travel during the investigation.
Information provided to Oregon State Police indicated this was a fatality after the driver was flown from the scene toward a Portland-area hospital. However, state police now say that information was wrong.
Oregon State Police officers, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office and local emergency responders were at the scene as of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. State troopers are investigating the crash.
They say around 2:25 p.m. a white Ford four-door pickup, driven by 39-year-old Damion Louis Wilson from Portland, was westbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 19 when it "traveled into the grass center median and crashed into a directional-arrow-message trailer positioned on the inside shoulder," according to a state police press release.
The trailer marked the beginning of a highway work zone.
Troopers believe the pickup traveled back across the westbound lanes, rolling several times before coming to rest on its wheels about 50 feet off the right highway shoulder.
Wilson was transported to Oregon Health & Science University by LifeFlight with serious injuries.
Safety restraint use is not confirmed.
State troopers from the Portland Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Multnomah County Sheriff's Office deputies, ODOT and local fire personnel responded to assist.
