'We hear people shooting guns while we are working'

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- This Springfield man said he's afraid to go to work. That's why he does not want to be identified.

"We hear people shooting guns while we are working," he said.

He cuts trees as a contractor for the Weyerhaeuser Company. He works on land that's right next to public land, an area popular with target shooters.

"That's not safe," he said. "Ducking your head sometimes."

There are bullet holes all over signs along the access road. Last Friday the man found a gun and it went off.

"I bent over to pick it up, and it just discharged into my leg," he said.

KVAL News called the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA. They confirmed they are investigation the shooting.

The Lane County Sheriff's Office is also looking into it.

Deputy Dennis Ewing said it's not uncommon for them to respond to reports of illegal shooting in that area. We also called Weyerhaeuser.

"We have not been contacted directly by anyone about safety in terms of this particular operation," Public Affairs Manager Greg Miller said

If a complaint is filed, Miller said, employees and contractors would not be allowed back until it was deemed safe. Miller said so far, no one has filed an official complaint, so no one has been taken off the land.

The man we talked to said he's filed a complaint and nothing has changed.

"I am never going to go back up there and work," he said. "Period."

Another Weyerhaeuser employee called us with a similar story. She said she's also complained but the company won't do anything about it.
