EUGENE, Ore. -- Every morning, Mayim Stiller wakes up, makes himself breakfast and goes to school.

His classroom, however, is located about 15 feet from his bedroom.

On this particular Thursday, half of his assignments are completed by 10:30 in the morning.

The high school sophomore doesn't travel very far; he studies in the comfort of his own home. His parents can help keep him motivated.

"How's it going? You getting your stuff done today?" his mom asks him.

It's independent schooling for students who need the flexibility.

"It's kind of like public school at home," said 4th-grade Oregon Connection Academy Teacher Courtney Whittington.

Whittington teaches from home, setting aside specific time each day for class instruction.

"Instead of kids going to a classroom in a brick and mortar building every day, they're getting on their computer at home to check in with their teacher to see what their lessons are," she said.

Stiller isn't the only one cashing in on the flexibility. There are a growing number of students who attend virtual charter public school where they connect with other students and teachers online.

"I call each of my students at least once every week on the phone," Whittington said. "We'll talk about their lessons and I'll have them read to me over the phone."

The assignments are designed to work around each students schedule. For Stiller, activities like pre-professional ballet.

"I can do a little extra work or something," Stiller explained. "So then when I have some big rehearsal or performance or something I can focus on just dancing. Dancing takes up so much time out of my schedule."

Oregon Connection Academy offers a number of ways, including field trips to encourage social interaction. While Stiller may not experience as much interaction with high schoolers inside a classroom setting, he's able to focus on a passion with the flexibility from home.
