Pilot in critical condition after 2nd Aurora Airport crash
AURORA, Ore. – Neighbors heard the familiar sounds of an airplane crash Saturday, just one week after another crash near this rural airport ended with a plane's tail protruding from a nearby home.
The spokesperson for the Canby Fire agency originally told us this was simply a hard landing, and that no one was hurt.
However, Marion County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Don Thomson confirmed Saturday night that a small plane had crashed at the Aurora Airport. He said the crash happened around 5:45 p.m. Saturday.
Meanwhile, a Life Flight spokesperson reported one person had been transported by air to Oregon Health & Science University hospital in Portland.
UPDATE: We now know the pilot of that single-engine airplane – 53-year-old Kevin Carr of Vancouver – appears to have crashed into a hangar at the Aurora Airport.
The aircraft was a 1996 Savage-Cozy experimental. According to indications from the sheriff's department's preliminary investigation, the plane struck the roof of a hangar before coming to rest on the airport ramp east of the runway.
A spokesperson for OHSU hospital tells us Carr is in critical condition as of early Sunday afternoon.
Marion County Sheriff's Office deputies were on the scene Saturday night. They were joined by emergency-rescue personnel from the Aurora Fire Department.
Members of Aurora Fire were the ones who "extricated" Carr from the airplane wreckage, said Marion County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Don Thomson. Carr was reportedly the sole occupant of the plane.
The Federal Aviation Administration is conducting its own investigation into the cause of the crash.
