CLACKAMAS, Ore. (AP) - Police say a fatal traffic crash occurred shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday night when a Lexus automobile failed to negotiate a curve in West Linn while going 96 miles an hour.

Authorities say it happened near Rosemont Road.

Police say they believe the westbound automobile left the roadway going nearly 100 miles an hour and struck a maple tree. The posted speed limit on the road is 40 miles per hour.

The deceased driver was alone in the car. He was identified as 48-year-old Kevin Gilbertson of West Linn.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's office and other law enforcement agencies are investigating.
