VANCOUVER, Wash. - The man accused of killing a Vancouver police dog during a standoff told a judge Wednesday he should have shot a second police dog that bit him.

Ronald J. Chenette, 38, is accused of killing Dakota, a 5-year-old German shepherd and Vancouver police member, as police searched for the man in an area of heavy brush and trees near Brush Prairie, Wash., on Tuesday.

Dakota, pictured below, was fatally shot and another dog, Akbar, eventually found Chenette, who was taken into custody after a struggle with officers, police said.

On Wednesday, Chenette made his made his first court appearance in Clark County Superior Court, and he chose to make a spectacle - pretending to fire a gun at a camera while being led into court.

Later he told the judge that he should have killed the dog that bit him.

"Charles Manson rules," he said as he was led away from court.

Chenette has previous convictions for second-degree murder and second-degree assault.

Deputy Prosecutor Jim David said he plans to add a firearm enhancement to the charge against Chenette for Tuesday's incident, making it a "strike" under Washington's three strikes law.

If convicted, Chenette could face life imprisonment.

A judge decided to have him held without bail for Friday's arraignment.
