FBI believes they've caught 'Waddling Bandit'

By KATU Web Staff

PORTLAND, Ore. - The FBI believes they caught the so-called "Waddling Bandit" on Friday night - a man believed responsible for as many as 20 bank robberies in Oregon and southwest Washington in recent years.

Authorities arrested 71-year-old Robert Christie of Tillamook after stopping his vehicle on Interstate 5 in Clark County.

Christie was charged Friday with the Oct. 16 robbery of a Bank of America branch in Albany.

FBI Agents believe he may be responsible for 19 other robberies at banks stretching from Kelso, Wash., to Medford since April 2005.

The robber got the nickname for the way he walks.  He never showed a weapon, and in about half of the robberies, he targeted bank branches inside grocery stores. He wore a hat in all of the robberies and carried a bag in some of the robberies.

It was not immediately clear what led the FBI to Christie.

Authorities obtained a search warrant for Christie's home, and details of the warrant were expected to be released next week that could shed light on the investigation.
