Police investigate fatal shooting in SE Portland

John Stewart was found fatally shot in a car in southeast Portland Wednesday morning.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Police believe a man sitting in a parked car was killed in a drive-by shooting in southeast Portland Wednesday morning.

Investigators identified the man killed as 31-year-old John William Stewart.

The shooting occurred about 2 a.m. near the intersection of Southeast 101st Avenue and Southeast Division Street, police said. Police believe Stewart was sitting in the driver's seat of the parked car when another vehicle pulled alongside and someone fired multiple shots at Stewart.

An autopsy determined that Stewart died from a gunshot wound to the torso, police said.

Two people found at the scene told police they were with Stewart when the shooting happened.

Detectives do not believe it was an act of random violence, but they did not release any suspect information Wednesday afternoon.

The closure of traffic on busy Southeast Division Street during heavy morning fog made for a traffic problem, but officers said they did not want to miss any evidence that may have been in the roadway near the crime scene.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Steve Ober at (503) 823-4003, Detective Jim McCausland at (503) 823-0449 or Detective Todd Gradwahl at (503) 823-0255.
