Two South Eugene High School students drown at the coast

YACHATS, Ore. - Two young men died Saturday when they were swept into the ocean and drowned.

The incident happened around 12:40 p.m. Saturday near Smelt Sands State Park.

According to the Oregon State Police, the body of an 18-year-old male was recovered and a 17-year-old male remains missing despite efforts by emergency responders to find him. He is presumed drowned.

The young men have been identified as 18-year-old Connor Gregory Ausland and 17-year-old Jack Harnsongkram. Both are from Eugene and they were both students at South Eugene High School. They were visiting the coast with several fellow students and adults.

The Oregon State Police said their preliminary investigation shows that a group of the students were on a rocky outcropping near the Adobe Resort when two of them were swept into the ocean.
