CLARK COUNTY, Wash. - Authorities are investigating what led a freight train to collide with a car in Clark County Saturday evening, killing a man.

It happened at a rail crossing in the 18100 block of Old Evergreen Highway shortly after 8:30 p.m. Fire officials said the train dragged the vehicle about a mile down the tracks before the train was able to come to a stop in the 17200 block of the highway.

According to the Clark County Sheriff's Office, officials with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad called 911 to report that a westbound freight train had struck the vehicle. When emergency crews arrived, they found a white Subaru station wagon still on the tracks at the front of the stopped train. The driver was found dead inside the vehicle.

The sheriff's office did not immediately identify the driver pending notification of next of kin. Officials said the man was in his 40s.
