PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State University says the landslide that recently swept through homes and closed a highway had its origin on clear-cut timber land it owns. But the school's foresters don't believe that the clear-cuts were responsible.

University officials asked the state Department of Forestry to review its logging practices on the tract of land owned and managed by OSU's College of Forestry near Clatskanie.

The College of Forestry also will conduct its own examination of slides from clear-cuts to determine how much they contributed to the landslide last week.

The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries released on its Web site a step-by-step diagram of events that led to the landslide.

It cited two small landslides from OSU clear-cuts during heavy rains two weeks ago and said they "likely blocked the drainage," by clogging a culvert just downstream.
