Tempers flare at girls basketball game

ESTACADA, Ore. - A Molalla fifth- and sixth-grade girls' basketball coach has been charged in connection with his behavior at a game against Estacada Saturday in which authorities said he grabbed and cursed at a teen referee who had ejected him from the game.

Clackamas County Sheriff's officials said it was just one of many confrontations during the game at Estacada High School, which reportedly ended with fans from both teams yelling at each other, one coach shoving another and many frightened and crying girls fleeing with their parents.

The sheriff's office gave this version of events based on witness accounts:

The Molalla coach, 34-year-old Jeffery Scott Larsen, was whistled for a technical foul in the first half when he argued with the 17-year-old referee about a foul called on one of his players. Then at the start of the second half, Larsen was whistled for a second technical foul - which was grounds for his ejection from the game - after he slammed his clipboard down on the hand of a student scorekeeper while upset about the officiating.

After he was ejected, Larsen refused to leave the gym and instead stood in a corner and continued to coach his team while yelling at the referee - an Estacada High School junior named Houston Webb, pictured below.

The Molalla fans continued to taunt the referee as well.

When the game ended, fans from both sides swarmed the floor and yelled at each other. No one was physically hurt, however.

Larsen, meanwhile, was seen grabbing the arm of the referee, cocking his own fist back and calling the teen a vulgar name.

At the same time, a Molalla assistant coach, 32-year-old James Robert Ulin, reportedly shoved the Estacada coach, 47-year-old Kevin Olds, who came out to defend the referee. Olds is also the principal of Estacada Junior High.

The two Molalla coaches were gone when sheriff's deputies arrived but authorities interviewed both of them Sunday to get their version of events.

Larsen was then taken to the Clackamas County jail, cited for a misdemeanor, criminal trespassing of a sporting event, and released.

Larsen's wife told KATU Sunday that the accusations against her husband were all false, but she declined to comment further.

Ulin was not cited, but the sheriff's office said additional charges may follow. He also declined to comment.

One parent of a Molalla player told KATU Sunday that Larsen did not threaten to punch the referee.

"There was no swinging of hands," said Melody Swenson, pictured at right. "There was a lot of words going back and forth to each other but that was all it was."

She blamed the referee for letting the game get physical and dangerously out of control. She pulled her daughter off the court at one point.

Swenson also defended Larsen: "These girls, their self-esteem, everything. He makes them feel like they are the best basketball players in the world. He has never ever showed anger or anything towards them."

The sheriff's office asked anyone who videotaped the fracas to call them at (503) 655-8211.
