Photos: Boeing's Dreamliner lands in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – One of the world’s newest and most advanced passenger jets touched down at Portland International Airport on Thursday.
The Boeing 787, known as the Dreamliner, landed in Portland so employees at a Boeing paint facility located at PDX could check out the new jet.
The Dreamliner features several new features in the passenger cabin, including large dimmable windows and higher cabin humidity, which Boeing says increases comfort.
Boeing says the airplane also is more efficient than other planes.
KATU had a chance to check out the plane. Click through the photo gallery to see the new jet up close.
The dimming windows are a nice feature. Are the seats as narrow as they look, or have they actually increased in width to accommodate the ever-expanding girth of the average American? It looks like there's a little more space between rows, at least in the section shown in the photos. I'm never very comfortable reclining into the lap of the person behind me. If that person happens to be a gentleman of about my age who is traveling with his spouse, it feels even more awkward. I always wonder if I should introduce myself first....
@Dogaroo The aircraft the visited, ZA003, is the oldest 787 still flying (ZA001 and ZA002 have been put in desert storage). It is a marketing and flight test aircraft that will never be delivered to an airline.
Â
The individual airlines decides how their planes will be configured. This includes the exact design of the seats, how they recline, etc...
Too bad I'll never be able to afford to fly in it.
KATU, you have some lucky people.
@molotovmouse, livefyre won't let me reply to you, so posting here.  It looks like the 787 has quite successfully competed with the A380. The 787 currently has almost 5x as many orders as the A380.
This is a beautiful aircraft.
If it delivers on the efficiency promise Boeing has made then they are going to have a real winner on their hands.
Livefyre stinks
you got that right.
Cant comment from my office anymore. Livefyre isnt compatible with firewalls. Probably cause they are trying to capture too much info from you while you post.
So the big switch is going to just bite K2 in the butt. I dont read K2 during the day anymore and soon wont even come here in the evening.
Total fail.
Nice!

It's good to see an American company grabbing some of the commercial aviation market.
@Thumper62Â Â Â 85% of that aircraft is designed and made in other countries that's why it was almost 4 years behind schedule.
It actually resembles a larger version of the 737...a very successful aircraft that is still being built.
Looks OK to me--can't wait to fly in one!
It looks tiny. I thought this plane was supposed to compete with the Airbus A380.
@molotovmouse It does, just not in passenger capacity.8,000 mile range, super quiet, lower cabin pressure for comfort, ability to land where the 380 can't, super strong carbon fiber resin, and more.I want one for myself for Christmas.  My wife has 6 months left to save up, so...  :)Â
@dblshot @molotovmouse The 787 does not, in any way, compete with the A380. The serve very different roles.
Â
Airbus is currently developing another aircraft, the A350, that is intended to be a direct 787 competitor. Airbus misread the market 10 years ago and went big when they sould have gone efficient. Now they are playing catch up, the A350 will not even begin flight testing for at least a year and half.
Very cool plane I hope it does well.
Such an awesome plane! I hope the introduction of these fuel efficient planes will lead to more international and long-distance domestic flights out of PDX. I sure do miss Hawaiian Airlines' flights to Maui. Hopefully a new airline steps in so Alaska Airlines doesn't have a monopoly on so many routes to Hawaii. Also Delta Airlines better start using the 787 on the PDX-Tokyo flights because their 767's are so crummy.
