PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Two men were found guilty in the shooting death of Asia Bell, a mother of four killed on the porch of her Portland home more than five years ago.

Deprince Hale, 30, and Alexander Klein, 29, were accused of spraying Bell's house with bullets in retaliation for the killing of Klein's half brother.

The jury deliberated three days before convicting both men of murder and attempted murder.

The Nov. 20, 2002, shooting happened as Bell's four children were inside the house watching a movie. One of them came outside to find the 24-year-old woman dead on the porch.

Bell's husband, Tyrone James, was blinded in the attack. Robert Milhouse, a friend who had dropped by, was also wounded.

Perlia Bell, whose persistence kept the investigation into her daughter's killing alive, issued a plea for calm after Monday's verdict. Six members of her family and extended family have been murdered since 1979.

Prosecutor Rod Underhill told jurors at the opening of the monthlong trial that Bell died because an angry gang member wanted revenge.

The key witness for the prosecution was Sonja Hutchens, 27, who called police to cut a deal after being sentenced to nine months in jail for theft, car theft and providing false information to police.

She told police that she was at the scene the night of the shooting and had helped Hale wash the gunshot residue off his jacket.

Benjamin Kim, the attorney for Hale, said detectives were so desperate to solve the crime that they erroneously believed the woman.

"You have to understand the tremendous pressure there was to close it," Kim said. "They wanted to believe."
