GLENEDEN BEACH, Ore. - A 16-year-old boy remained missing Sunday after he apparently went into the ocean a day earlier to try to rescue an 11-year-old struggling in the heavy surf at Gleneden Beach, authorities said.
The 11-year-old was eventually pulled from the water by a firefighter after spending roughly 45 minutes in the ocean and was taken to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital by Coast Guard helicopter, where he was pronounced dead despite extensive lifesaving efforts, Oregon State Police said.
Authorities identified the 11-year-old as River Jenison of Westfir, which is located near Oakridge.

It all started about 1:15 p.m. when a group that was with Jenison noticed he was having trouble in the water and went in to try to help him. Emergency crews responded, and a Depoe Bay firefighter, Dennis Knudson, reportedly spotted and pulled the boy to shore about 2 p.m., state police said.
At the same time, another group of people reported that a 16-year-old boy was missing after he had apparently gone in the water to try to help Jenison. Authorities searched for 16-year-old Ross Barfuss of Aloha until about 4:15 p.m. before suspending the effort Saturday, state police said.
