SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Two women and three children were killed Tuesday when a driver lost control and crashed into a tree in Yamhill County, the Oregon State Police said.

The Toyota Camry was on Wallace Road in rural Salem when the driver lost control around a corner and hit a blue spruce tree that stood about 50 feet tall. The tree was toppled by the force of the impact.

Five people died at the scene and two others were taken by helicopter to Portland hospitals, police said.

Wednesday morning, police released the identities of those in the car. The deceased include:

  • Lena Buchholz, 20, from McMinnville, who was driving and was wearing a seat belt.
  • Wendy Medina George, 27, from McMinnville. She was not wearing a seat belt.
  • Soraya Medina George, 7, daughter of Wendy George. She was not wearing a seat belt.
  • Saira Medina George, 5, also a daughter of Wendy George. She was not wearing a seat belt.
  • Richard Ramos, 7, son of Ricardo Zolario, who survived the crash. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Two people were injured in the crash, including Ricardo Ramos Zolario, 33, from Salem. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Sabian Martinez, 2, also survived. He is the son of Lena Buchholz, the driver who died in the crash.

Martinez was in a child seat but investigators say the seat was not properly restrained.

The vehicle, a Toyota Camry four-door sedan, is designed to seat 5 people with seat belts. Seven people were in the car.

Lt. Marti West of the Oregon State Police said the skies were clear at the time of the crash, the pavement was dry and no other cars were involved. "They were just going too fast," she said.

Barbara Stebbins-Boaz, whose tree was toppled, said speeding is a common problem on the road and accidents are a "routine experience" for those who live alongside it.

"Sometimes there are hurt people and sometimes they walk away," she said. "This is the first fatality. Five people. It hasn't sunk in."
