Ticket scam suspect refunds money
Brandon Ruddick (right) returns money to Richard Stadig (left), who said he unknowingly bought counterfeit tickets from Ruddick. By Thom Jensen and KATU Web StaffPORTLAND, Ore. - People who were ripped off when a local man allegedly sold them counterfeit Rascal Flatts concert tickets are starting to get their money back. Richard Stadig was one of more than 400 people who were turned away from the Rose Garden Friday night. Like a lot of other people, he found tickets on Craigslist and bought them from 24-year-old Brandon Ruddick. Little did Stadig know that Ruddick is a wanted man in Lane County where he is accused of bogus Internet sales. He has also been convicted in Washington County for similar crimes and is a suspect in Clackamas County. Stadig helped KATU News set up a sting and bring Ruddick out into the open. After two hours of waiting, Ruddick finally showed up and gave Stadig his money back, plus an extra $10. We tried to question Ruddick following the exchange he had with Stadig, but he kept saying "I have a lawyer" and holding his hat over his face. He was obviously not happy to see us. Ruddick denied taking advantage of people with these types of schemes even after we pointed out his criminal record and the fact that he is a suspect in current schemes. Although he tried to avoid our questions, he finally did offer up an apology. "I am very sorry, and I am doing my best to get the money back," Ruddick said when we asked him whether he had anything to say to the people he had taken money from. "I didn't mean to rip anybody off. That's why I'm giving the money back." When Ruddick left, we went back to Stadig, who had cash in hand. "Well, I got my money back, and hopefully justice will be served and this doesn't happen again," he said. Another person, Toni Ewalt, said her daughter bought tickets from Ruddick as well. She told us he returned her money late Tuesday evening - all $240, plus an extra $10. Ruddick said he plans to give all of the victims their money back. |
