Army captain from Oregon killed in Afghanistan
An Army captain from Oregon was killed while on patrol in Afghanistan on Friday, according to the Department of Defense.
Capt. James D. Nehl, 37, was shot and killed during a patrol in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan, according to a short announcement from the DOD.
Nehl was from Gardiner, Ore., which is in Douglas County.
He was based at Fort Riley, Kansas, where he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.
Nehl was the eighth Douglas County resident killed in Afghanistan or Iraq since 2005. The Oregon Military Department lists 136 from Oregon or with strong ties to the state.
The Roseburg News-Review quotes Reedsport Mayor Keith Tymchuk, a teacher at Reedsport High where Nehl graduated in 1993. Tymchuk says he was a good student who was interested in the military.
Ghazni Province is in southeastern Afghanistan, along a 300-mile highway linking Afghanistan's two largest cities.
The fact that this brave young's man death was for NOTHING does not diminish his bravery or sacrifice in any way,

The craven cowardice and outright LIES that the politicians in Congress spew may even further ennoble his sacrifice, because he did what he was told to do, when he was told to do it, without question or hesitation.Â

The fact that he was BETRAYED by people in his own country actually adds to the value of his gift, his life, that he laid down at the altar of Freedom and Service, even though it was given for selfish politicial ends of greed and vanity.
