Credit union hit by text message scam

This is a press release courtesy of Oregon Community Credit Union

Oregon Community Credit Union is currently under attack from fraudsters sending cell phone text messages stating "Your Oregon Community CU account is closed due to unusual activity" and requesting the recipient call a phone number in Florida.

This message is not being initiated by the credit union. Recipients should not reply nor should recipients call the number listed.

Oregon Community Credit Union phone center and branch staff are currently being overwhelmed with phone calls and walk-in visits. Recipients of the text message are asked not to visit or call Oregon Community Credit Union at this time unless the recipient does indeed find unauthorized activity on their account. If a member does choose to call, wait times will be longer than usual. An unusual amount of Internet activity is also slowing access to online services today. Members are asked to try again at a later time.

If recipients of the text message did respond or called the phone number in the text message and gave personal information, the member DOES need to call or visit Oregon Community Credit Union as soon as possible.

The phone number in the text message is from Florida. When called, it is an automated system that says the caller will need to enter 3 pieces of information, beginning with debit card numbers. Oregon Community Credit Union does not call, email or text message members asking for account information.
