EVERETT, Wash. -- A young Everett man was sentenced to nearly 28 years in prison on Tuesday for fatally shooting a former Mariner High School soccer star.

In the August shooting in Stanwood, Dustin M. Jackson shot Nicky DeSimone in the head as the young man slept on the floor of his girlfriend's home. Prosecutors say Jackson shot the 19-year-old DeSimone out of jealousy.

Prosecutors say even before the murder, Jackson and DeSimone had exchanged threatening text messages after Jackson grew angry the victim was dating Jackson's ex-girlfriend.

Dustin Maurice Jackson, 19, received the top punishment allowed under state sentencing guidelines during an emotional court hearing held under heavy security.

On Tuesday, Jackson sat stone-faced as DeSimone's family vented anger toward the man who killed him.

"Your honor, my husband and son had to do something that no family should ever face," said the victim's mother, Evie DeSimone. "Actually, they chose to do it because they're strong and they love Nicky that much. They dressed Nicky's lifeless body and prepared him for the viewing."

"August 28, my son died. I went with him. I'm just a body. Please do the right thing. He should not walk," the victim's father, Vince DeSimone, pleaded with the judge.

Even with extra security in the courtroom the tension drove DeSimone's father into a blind rage.

At one point on Tuesday, Vince attempted to jump over a railing separating onlookers from the front of the courtroom. He was restrained by his son, Michael, and several uniformed Snohomish County sheriff's officers.

Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Larry McKeeman said he agreed with Vince, who described the killing as "a senseless execution."

When asked whether he'd like to address the court, Jackson said nothing.
