NEWBERG, Ore. - A Dayton woman was killed Sunday when an oncoming car lost control on Highway 99W and slammed into her vehicle.

Oregon State Police identified the woman as 51-year-old Carma Colleen Smith.

According to state police, 26-year-old Leonel Zurita Loeza of Portland was driving a 1994 Ford Taurus north on the highway at a high rate of speed between Dundee and Newberg when he lost control about 3 p.m. After crossing the grassy median and launching into the air, the Ford crashed into Smith's 2000 Toyota Avalon before hitting another southbound vehicle, a 2003 Toyota Corolla.

Loeza was taken by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Hospital while one of his passengers, 21-year-old Izquierdo L. Jonatan of Beaverton, was taken by LifeFlight to Oregon Health and Science University, state police said. Another passenger in the Ford, 31-year-old Nicholas Contreras of Beaverton, was taken by ambulance to Newberg Providence Hospital.

Their conditions were not immediately clear.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one in the Toyota Corolla was injured, state police said.

Investigators believe alcohol and speed could have contributed to causing the crash, state police said.

The highway was closed for more than five hours Sunday, though vehicles were detoured around the area.
