SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - A woman whose water broke in a car accident gave birth to a healthy baby.

Kelly Fenley, 25, suffered no injuries when another driver suffering a medical problem crashed into her vehicle.  But at nine months pregnant, she was transported to the emergency room at Sacred Heart Medical Center where she delivered a healthy baby.

The driver who was with Fenley, 25-year-old David Fenley, was listed in serious condition before noon May 12. The sheriff's office said he suffered chest, arm and knee injuries.

The incident began around 8:30 p.m. May 11 when a blue Ford Escape ran a red light at Main Street and Bob Straub Parkway in Springfield and nearly hit a patrol car from the Lane County Sheriff's Office.

A second patrol car attempted to stop the Ford, but the driver did not pull over. The Ford maintained a speed of 50 to 60 mph but did not appear to be evading the patrol car, according to the sheriff's office.

The Ford continued for approximately 16 minutes eastbound on Main Street, as it became the McKenzie Highway, without stopping. Then the Ford drifted into oncoming traffic.

The Fenleys saw the patrol car lights. David Fenley slowed his white Honda Civic and pulled over to yield to the patrol car when his car was hit by the Ford, which was operating without lights.

Deputies said the driver of the Ford, Stacie Mitchell, 44, was barely responsive at the scene. According to a press release, Mitchell was suffering from a pre-existing medical issue. Emergency personnel at the scene told KVAL Mitchell is diabetic.

Mitchell was transported to McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center for treatment for the pre-existing condition. She did not appear to suffer injuries in the crash, according to the sheriff's office.

The passengers in the rear of the white Honda, Michaele and James Feeney, ages 60 and 65, of Anchorage, Alaska, suffered no obvious injury, according to the sheriff's office.

The accident closed the McKenzie Highway for more than three hours. One lane of traffic reopened around midnight.
