PORTLAND, Ore. - Police said a man caught going through a car in a Jantzen Beach-area parking lot died Tuesday morning.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the 35-year-old suspect lying next to a car and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him for about 20 minutes.

Despite those efforts, the man was later pronounced dead at an area hospital, police said.

His name was not immediately released.

Homicide detectives were called to the scene following the incident, which began about 6 a.m. near the 300 block of North Hayden Bay Drive.

Full details of the incident were not released but it appeared the suspect was hurt during a confrontation with someone else. A police spokesman said the bureau is taking the investigation slowly since officers were involved with trying to resuscitate the man.

An autopsy performed Tuesday did not determine the man's cause of death.
