Rafters OK after cold plunge into Sandy River

SANDY RIVER - Four men who were plunged into the cold and fast-moving Sandy River Thursday afternoon when their raft overturned are thinking twice about their decision not to wear life vests.

The incident happened in the Dodge Park area.  The rafters capsized while trying to navigate what is referred to as the 'pipeline' portion of the Sandy River.

When the raft overturned, two of the men were able to get to shore right away but two others disappeared down the river and a search and rescue effort was launched.

The two missing men floated quite a ways downriver and were eventually able to get to shore.  One of them was having such a hard time recovering that he was throwing up.

Despite being cold and worn out, all four were fine following the harrowing incident.  However, they were each cited for not wearing a personal flotation device, a ticket that runs about $240.

When asked why they decided not to wear life vests, one of the men said they just thought if they ran into trouble they could throw them on real quick.  However, none of them had time to do that.

According to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, the temperature of the Sandy River was about 42 degrees.  In addition, the water was running high and swift, making the conditions very hazardous.

The men were identified as 26-year-old Jason Michael Moore Androshuk of Portland, 22-year-old Dustin William Roberts of Portland, 23-year-old John Jacob Leckei of Portland and 24-year-old Jeff Camburn Brown of Happy Valley.
