SKAMANIA COUNTY - A 19-year-old woman who went on a "spiritual quest" wearing only a fanny pack is now missing and a search and rescue effort is underway to find her.
Maureen Kelly, 19, of Vancouver left Canyon Creek Campground (located east of Amboy, Wash., in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest) just after 5 p.m. Sunday.
According to Undersheriff Dave Cox with the Skamania County Sheriff's Office, the woman walked away from the campground around 5 p.m. Sunday. She was in the nude and had only a fanny pack with her and little, if any, equipment or supplies with her.
"We had a fairly mild evening last night with temperatures in the lower 50s," Cox said. "We have set up a command post in the area and currently are utilizing ground search teams in the immediate area in an attempt to locate her this morning."
The Canyon Creek area is steep and mountainous with heavy timber and brush. Searchers don't know whether she was on a road or trail or if she is moving cross country.
Searchers swept the area for Kelly until nightfall. They will continue the search Tuesday, according to the sheriff's office.
Both Clark County and Hood River County are helping with the search.
