JEFFERSON, Ore. - A 13-year-old boy playing a game of "chicken" with a freight train was seriously injured Friday night when the train hit him, authorities said.

The boy, Kyle Clement of Jefferson, was eventually taken by LifeFlight to Oregon Health and Science University, where he was listed in serious condition with internal injuries and multiple fractures, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said.

According to the sheriff's office, the boy was playing on the train tracks on Union Street with friends as the mile-long Union Pacific freight train came through town blowing its horn about 9:30 p.m. As his friends all got off the tracks, Clements tried to dodge the train by running in front of it and jumping off the tracks at the last second, the sheriff's office said.

He did not make it in time, and the train threw him about 30 feet off the tracks, the sheriff's office said.
