GOVERNMENT CAMP, Ore. (AP) _ An 18-year-old climber from Eugene was injured in an avalanche on Mount Hood Saturday but authorities said he and two companions made it off of the mountain safely.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said the three were on a part of the mountain known as the Pearly Gates at about the 9,000-foot level when the avalanche began shortly before noon.

Deputies said 18-year-old Ian Metcalf suffered cuts and bruises after being trapped in waist-deep snow.

A member of Washington State's Central Mountain Rescue, Powell McLean, was able to help Metcalf.

The other two members of the climbing party were Dan Purkey, 67, of Eugene and Doyle Allies, 51, of Turner
