Suspect shot during stolen car Craigslist sting

VANCOUVER, Wash. - A suspect ended up shot in the arm after police say he tried to run down an officer during a Craigslist sting set up between police and someone who got ripped off when they sold their vehicle online.

The incident happened Thursday evening at Northeast Thurston Way and Vancouver Plaza Drive, which is south of the Vancouver Mall.

"My mom, we just got back from school and then all of a sudden we saw these cop cars and then my mom went home and I just stayed here," said Tyler Thenthongkham.  "And there was like a guy in the bush over there."

Details about what exactly went down are unclear at this point, but we did talk with the man who got ripped off when he put his Nissan Xterra on Craigslist.

"I received a call Monday afternoon that they wanted to buy my truck," Sergio, who didn't want his last name used, told us.  "So they show up, we test drive it and they said 'well, we're going to go to the bank.'  They go to the bank, get me a cashier's check and I say OK.  As soon as they leave, I was like 'oh man, something's wrong.' So the next day, first thing in the morning, I went to the bank and I told them I got a cashier's check and I think it's fake."

It turned out that the cashier's check was a fake, so Sergio filed a report with police.  He said when he told a friend what had happened, his friend starting doing some poking around on the Internet and found the Nissan Xterra for sale on Craigslist in Corvallis with the same phone number that had been used in Sergio's sale.

Sergio said they went to police with the information and that's when officers helped them set up a sting to try to nab the crook(s).

Police posed as buyers.

"During that interaction, the suspects attempted to flee and then struck the officer, we believe, intentionally," said Chris Sutter with the Vancouver Police Department.

Police said that is when one shot was fired and one suspect ended up with a gunshot wound to the arm.  Another suspect was arrested as well.

The suspect who was shot in the arm and the officer struck by the vehicle were both taken to the hospital.  They are expected to be fine.

When asked what he thought about what happened during the sting, Sergio said "I think they got what they deserved."

Sergio's friend, John (the man who helped police set up the sting), had the same type of sentiment.

"I think it's justice served," he said.  "You know, they can't just run around getting people's cars for phony checks.  His car was stolen one day and for sale the next on the Internet."

Sergio will eventually get his truck back once police have completed their investigation.  Sergio said he does not believe he is the first person to fall victim to these thieves.  He believes there are others out there as well.
