Husband of missing woman fails lie detector test
PORTLAND, Ore. - A local mother mysteriously vanishes and now comes word that her husband failed a lie detector test, despite being adamant that he had nothing to do with her disappearance.
"I was offered a voluntary lie detector (test), and I said, 'OK, I'll come in and take it to clear my name,' and it completely backfired on me," said Brian Cole. Heather Mallory Cole, 32, (pictured at right) disappeared March 8 from the southeast Portland apartment where she lived with her husband. The two had gotten into a fight and she drove off into the night, never to be heard from again. Heather's car was later found abandoned and her credit cards and cell phone have not been used. So what happened to her? That is what police are trying to figure out. This week, investigators searched the couple's apartment and confiscated a computer, paperwork and Brian Cole's truck. Police have never called Brian Cole a suspect, and even Heather's in-laws say they are not jumping to conclusions. When we asked Brian Cole what he would say to the naysayers who think he did something to his wife, he wasn't really sure what to say. "I don't know what to say to them because they're going to think what they want to think already," he said. "It's a crappy situation to be in." When we caught up with Brian Cole on Friday, he was moving out of his apartment because his lease was up.
"I am staying absolutely neutral with Brian," said Jeni Mallory, Heather's mother. "Brian is the father of River, and I adore River, and he's a good dad and I'm staying absolutely neutral."
"It's tough going through all of our stuff," he said. "We just had our third anniversary, wedding anniversary."
Cole is planning on living in Idaho with family because he says he needs financial help.
