NEWPORT, Ore. - A Newport-area man was jailed Friday night after he allegedly shot a neighbor's cat with a .22-caliber long rifle, authorities said.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, a deputy responded to a report of shots fired in the 4400 block of South Coast Highway south of Newport about 5 p.m. Friday. After the deputy learned what had happened, he took 60-year-old Robert L. Field into custody.

Field was booked into the Lincoln County jail on charges of animal abuse and reckless endangering. His bail was set at $22,500.

It was not immediately clear why the cat was shot.
