Two motorcycles collide in SE Portland; 1 rider dies

PORTLAND, Ore. — Police say two motorcycles collided just before midnight Tuesday in Southeast Portland and one of the riders also was hit by an SUV and died at the scene.

It happened at Southeast 7th Avenue and Powell Boulevard.

Bystanders were performing CPR when officers and medics arrived, but they were unable to save the injured man.

The rider who died was 27-year-old Edward Paul Reis of South Carolina, police said.

Investigators believe Reis and his friend were riding eastbound on Powell when Reis put on the brakes to make a U-turn. His friend was unable to stop and rear-ended Reis, sending him flying off the motorcycle and into oncoming traffic.

The other motorcycle rider and SUV driver remained at the scene for investigating officers.

The Ross Island Bridge was closed for a time, but reopened before the Wednesday morning commute.
