SUTHERLIN, Ore. - A man who entered an unlocked home and passed out on the couch was fatally shot by the homeowner just minutes after police were called.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said a female called 911 around 3 a.m. Thursday to report that a stranger had entered her unlocked home and passed out on the couch.
By the time Sutherlin police officers arrived at the home seven minutes after the call, they were advised by dispatch that the male homeowner, Keith Cramer, had just called to say he had shot the stranger and believed he was dead.
It was not clear what led Cramer to shoot the intruder.
Officers found Michael Smith, 35, of Sutherlin, dead on the couch in the living room. He was shot once with a high-powered hunting rifle.
The investigation was ongoing Thursday.
