Large pile of recycled materials catches fire
CLACKAMAS, Ore. - A sprinkler system is credited with keeping a two-alarm fire in check at a recycling center in Clackamas.
Crews were called to SP Recycling on Southeast 120th Avenue just before 8 a.m. Saturday.
When firefighters arrived, there was heavy smoke coming from the roof and building. Officials said a 20-foot bale of paper caught fire and there was some concern it would spread.
"We had two crews up on the roof making sure it didn't extend up into the roof area," said Steve McAdoo with Clackamas Fire District #1 . "While they were up there, they opened up scuttles to help clear the smoke and heated gases."
Investigators said the fire was contained to the pile of recycled materials. There was no structural damage to the building.
Note: An earlier version of this story stated that the fire was at Wymore Transfer Company. It was later learned that although Wymore owns the building, it is occupied by SP Recycling.
