Clackamas Fire District #1 responded to a fire at 2001 Washington Street in Oregon City at 1:01 a.m. on Monday.

The fire was burning inside the South Metro Transfer Station dump pit. An alert security guard noticed the smoke and found a large fire burning in the pit. He quickly called 911.

First arriving crews were met with heavy black smoke pouring from the large warehouse-type building.

A second alarm was quickly called and multiple agencies, including Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue and Gladstone Fire were called to the scene to assist Clackamas Fire crews.

Many large diameter hose lines were brought into the building to contain the fire. Visibility was very poor, but crews were able to get to the seat of the fire and begin extinguishing it.

Again, like a similar fire eight days ago in Clackamas, a working sprinkler system and aggressive firefighting saved this building without any fire loss. There were no firefighter injuries, but crews did go through many cylinders of air fighting this very smoky fire.

When dumping garbage at transfer stations, make sure you are not dumping any flammable materials within these facilities, including briquettes or flares.
