Looters caught trying to scoop up Nikes from wreck

By Associated Press

HOOD RIVER, Ore. (AP) - A semi-trailer truck wreck on Interstate 84 blamed on a Columbia Gorge wildfire resulted in the death of a Michigan man and the attempted looting of a spilled load of Nike shoes.

Oregon State Police identified the victim as 47-year-old Kerry Ray Boatman of Marshall, Mich., a passenger in one of the trucks.

One truck collided with the other when the freeway was closed down Wednesday because of a grass fire that spread quickly near The Dalles.

Troopers at the scene caught several people trying to steal Nike shoes from boxes scattered along the road after the collision split open one of the trailers.

No arrests were reported. But troopers said the looters interfered with them and other emergency crews.
