PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Rescue divers have recovered the body of a man police say was jumping off the Hawthorne Bridge with friends late Thursday night.

At about midnight, investigators said a group of people was jumping off the span and then swimming to shore.

Officials say it was more for fun than to cool off since the temperature of the river water was about 70 degrees.

But one man who went over the rail with a friend didn't make it to back to shore.

Fire officials say they found the man's body about 12:30 a.m. Friday in about 20 feet of water. Divers described the conditions in the water as extremely murky with little or no visibility. They used underwater lights to locate the body.

The drowning victim hasn't been identified yet. He's described as in his mid-30s. Divers say he was not snagged or tangled up in any underwater obstacles.

Police stressed that jumping from any bridge crossing the river in the downtown area is very dangerous due to unknown underwater hazards and is also illegal. An investigation is continuing.
