Teen drowns despite rescue effort by brother
By KATU Web StaffESTACADA, Ore. - A 13-year-old boy drowned Sunday after becoming tired while trying to swim across the Clackamas River and being swept downstream, authorities said. On Monday, police identified the drowned teen as Mickyle Hunter Woodrum It happened near the Fish Creek Campground several miles above North Fork Reservoir about 4:30 p.m., according to Detective Jim Strovink, a spokesman for the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. The boy was not wearing a life jacket at the time. A witness said the victim's brother, Tabor Woodrum, 18, dove in but was unable to reach him. Tabor was slightly injured in the rescue attempt but declined medical assistance, according to police. A raft with five people aboard caught up to the teen and pulled him from the river at the Carter Bridge, Strovink said. At least two people aboard the raft were trained in CPR and administered it but were unable to revive the 13-year-old, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Strovink said. The boy may have been in the water for up to 20 minutes before he was pulled to shore, he said. |
