Drivers cheer for $3.99 gas
By KATU Web Staff
GRESHAM, Ore. - Now if it would only drop by another $2.
Gresham drivers buying gas with cash at a Safeway market were downright cheerful to be paying $3.99 a gallon after a long drumbeat of increases that has pushed regular gas well over $4 per gallon. Several other stations in the area were also at $3.99 per gallon and other stations were close to it but hovered just over $4. The lowest prices were typically for cash sales, using a credit or gas card bumped the price up about a dime per gallon on average. Diesel fuel remains well over $4 per gallon. A $16 drop in the price of oil last week is helping to stop the steady price escalations, but fears of damage to Gulf Coast oil facilities from hurricanes were driving the price back up Monday. Drivers seemed upbeat about the current dip in prices, but realistic about the future. One driver said he was sure oil companies would find a reason to get the price back up above $4 per gallon.
