Three-alarm blaze destroys warehouse
Onlookers watch a fire burn at a northeast Portland warehouse Wednesday. By Jeff Jaeger and KATU Web StaffPORTLAND, Ore. - A three-alarm fire destroyed a northeast Portland roofing supply warehouse Wednesday and sent people in nearby homes and businesses scrambling. The blaze was reported about 10 a.m. at Buckaroo Thermoseal at 5410 N.E. 109th Ave. and quickly went to two alarms before being upgraded to a third alarm.
The open air warehouse contained insulation and recycling material, but fire officials said the air was no more hazardous to breathe than at any other fire. The business employs about 35 people. When firefighters arrived, they found fire burning in several types of roofing materials in the roughly 100-foot-by-200-foot building. The 80 or so firefighters at the scene were worried about several hazards, including power lines falling and a 5,000 gallon diesel tank near the warehouse. Fire officials said no one was injured, but plenty of people rushed to protect nearby businesses and trucks - and even a home.
One of the biggest concerns was a wood recycling facility next door. "I got a bonfire sitting there waiting to burn if (firefighters) wouldn't have gotten here in time," said Mike Bland. Judith Hillman and her son did what they could to protect their home near the flames. He sprayed the building and a nearby tree with water. "I was concerned that my whole house was going to burn down. I was scared to death," Hillman said. "Probably within two minutes that tree would have been down and the house would have been gone," she said.
Flames could be seen from Interstate 205 near Portland International Airport and black smoke was visible from Vancouver, Wash. Fire officials were still investigating what ignited the blaze. |
