EUGENE, Ore. - A man on a bicycle stabbed a man in the back multiple times as the victim walked past the Lane County Courthouse near the Eugene Saturday Market.

Police were not immediately sure how, or if, the two men knew one another.

Witnesses reported seeing the man on the bicycle stab the other man with a "longer" knife. Police would not comment on the weapon.

The suspect fled by bicycle. Police detained him at Maurie Jacobs Park, along the Willamette River several blocks north of the crime scene.

The victim was taken to the hospital in unknown condition with multiple stab wounds to the back, police said.

Police and medics responded amidst the bustle of the Eugene Saturday Market and the Courthouse Free Speech Plaza in the city's Park Blocks just before 10 a.m. They had left the scene by 11 a.m.

Witnesses and police said the stabbing happened at the south end of the Free Speech Plaza at the Courthouse, east of the Saturday Market information booth.
