Two men burned in SE Portland house fire

PORTLAND, Ore. - Two men suffered burns at a house fire in southeast Portland on Friday.

The unidentified me were burned over 30 to 40 percent of their bodies as they tried to escape from the basement of the home that caught fire.

Both men had been working on a home next door. A co-worker, Tyler Hawkins, said he saw the men on fire as they ran from the home. He said he poured water on the men.

Red Allen, who lives near the home that caught fire, said he saw electrical wires "blowing up" on the metal roof of the house, sending sparks flying.

Matt Belmont also helped the victims and said both men were badly burned.

They were both taken to burn unit at Legacy Emmanuel Hospital in Portland. Their names and conditions have not been released.

John Nohr of Portland Fire and Rescue said he thinks the fire may have been exacerbated with fuel since a gas can was found nearby.

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
