Gregoire, Rossi advance in Wash. 'Top 2 Primary'

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire and Republican challenger Dino Rossi will face each other on November's general election ballot after getting the most votes in Washington's 'Top 2 Primary.'

Gregoire and Rossi will now reprise their historically close 2004 matchup, which saw Gregoire win the governor's mansion by just 133 votes after three ballot counts and a court challenge.

Tuesday evening, Gregoire had about 50 percent of the vote and Rossi had about 44 percent.

Under Washington's new primary system, no other candidates for governor will be listed on the general election ballot.

In the open race for state treasurer, assistant Alan Martin got 44 percent of the primary vote in his bid to move up to the top job. State Representative Jim McIntire also advanced with 41 percent of the vote.

State School Superintendent Terry Bergeson got 42 percent of the vote and will face Randy Dorn who got 30 percent in the top two primary.

Secretary of State Sam Reed got 58 percent of the primary vote and will face Jason Osgood who got 34 percent.

Lieutenant Governor Brad Owen got 53 percent of the primary vote and will face Marcia McCraw who got 25 percent.

State Auditor Brian Sonntag got 60 percent of the primary vote and will face Dick McEntee who got 34.

State Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler (CRYD' ler) got 54 percent of the primary vote and will face John Adams who got 36.

Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna got 56 percent of the primary vote and Democratic challenger John Ladenburg 44. Neither was challenged in the primary.

State Lands Commissioner Doug Sutherland got just over 50 percent of the primary vote and Democratic challenger Peter Goldmark got just under 50 percent. Neither was challenged in the primary.
