Wash. student scores hold steady on statewide WASL, SAT
By Associated Press
SEATTLE (AP) - Students across the state are holding steady on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning test. Meanwhile, Washington high school students in the class of 2008 did about as well on the SAT college entrance exam as students the year before.
Results of the statewide 2008 WASL were released Tuesday. The scores show some ups and downs, but students in most grades generally had similar passing rates this year and last. The spring 2008 results show fifth and eighth grade passing rates improved in all subjects. Third, fourth and seventh graders have lower passing rates in reading and math. Tenth graders improved their passing rates in reading, writing and science but dipped slightly in math. "I'm very proud of what the educators are doing, with a little support in investment of targeted resources to help us take the next jump we will prepare our students to take on the challenges that we have left in their hands in this world today," said Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson. "And they are ready and eager to do it." The average SAT scores for 2008 were 526 in reading, 533 in math and 509 in writing. The national averages were 502, 515 and 494, respectively. The SAT test is the most popular choice among Washington students who hope to go to college. More than 36,000 students in the class of 2008 took the SAT exam, mostly in their junior or senior years. Washington students who scored best on the SAT had parents with college degrees and higher family incomes. |
