FAIRVIEW, Ore. - One person was found dead and police were investigating if there was a second victim after the operators of a freight train passing through Fairview reported they had hit someone early Friday morning.

Once the crew got the Union Pacific train stopped, they discovered the remains of one person. Police have not released the identification or gender of the victim, or stated how the person came to be in the path of the train.

Crew members on the train reported they saw someone trying to move another person who was lying across the tracks as the train went down the rail line at about 45 mph.

The incident took place at about 2:15 a.m.

Police said they did not know whether the victim was a transient or someone trying to commit suicide by train. The death remains under investigation.

Traffic on the rail line was halted for about 5 hours while investigators worked at the scene.

The train originated in Portland and was headed east. Details regarding its destination and cargo were not released.
