EUGENE, Ore. -- Eugene and Springfield residents reported finding ash on cars parked overnight, and Cottage Grove residents report being shrouded in smoke.

The smoke and ash are entering the southern Willamette Valley from the Rattle Fire east of Roseburg, which exploded to more than 11,000 acres Wednesday morning, and the Royce Butte fire east of Willamette Pass, now burning on almost 400 acres. Early estimates of 1,100 were revised downward after new mapping of the fire, according to fire officials.

Lane Regional Air Protection Authority said upper levels winds brought smoke and ash into the area from the fires south of the Eugene/Springfield area. East winds are bringing ash and smoke from the Royce Butte fire.

Dust from farm fields is also contributing to the haze and air pollution.
