Online video guide informs first-time Wash. voters
By Bob Heye and KATU Web StaffVANCOUVER, Wash. - Washington politics have entered the digital age and state officials are hoping their up-to-date online voters guide, complete with video testimonials from candidates, will attract new voters. The online voting guide features videos submitted by the candidates. Ballot measures do not have videos. So far, 17 candidates have placed videos on the site. "I think video's different because you're watching them and you can see their body language," first-time voter Jessie Dole said, "and you can tell if they're, like, really serious." "Especially for young voters," Washington State University Associate Professor Mark Stephan said, " I think it's something they can more easily access and kind of connect with."
Stephan said the online video guide might be more informative that traditional pamphlets. Clark College Political Science instructor Michael Ceriello agreed with Stephan. "Obviously, the kids in my classes, they are much more Internet savvy," Ceriello said. "And they're more likely to run across this stuff than their grandparents are and that's great. If it gives them one more reason to vote, more power to 'em." You can access the Washington Video Voters Guide here.
